An Appreciation

David Charles Rule
17th April 1937 – 29th August 2000
David Rule, a loyal supporter of both the British Society for Disability and Oral Health and the International Association for Disability and Oral Health died on Monday 29th August 2000. David started his career with the Royal Army Dental Cor ps and then moved in February 1964 to take up a registrar’s post at the Eastman Dental Hospital in London. There he progressed to become a Consultant and Senior Lecturer in Paediatric Dentistry, a post he held, amongst many others, until his untimely death. David played a major role in the development of postgraduate education in the Thames Regions in particular and spent much of his time with Thames Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education. From 1990 he was Chairman of the Conference of Postgraduate Deans and Directors. David was also a member of the General Dental Council and amongst other duties was responsible for postgraduate education between 1995 and 1999. Many a junior dentist owes a debt of gratitude to David for his wise counsel during the formative years of their career. Along with other dental statesmen, David steered the early years of his specialty, Paediatric Dentistry, to fuller recognition. This he achieved not only through his Presidency of the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry during 1988-1989 and as Chairman of the fledgling Specialist Advisory Committee for Paediatric Dentistry, but also in the wider arena as Chairman of the Metropolitan Branch of the British Dental Association, and more recently as ViceD e a n of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. To members of BSDH and IADH David will be fondly
remembered for his energy and diplomacy during his years in office in both organisations. David was President of BSDH in 1980-1981. His considerable expertise in this field led soon after to his nomination as President of the International Association, IADH, in 1990 at their biennial congress in Nice, France. At the Gala Dinner of the Congress, David made awards to Mani Album and Peter Westphal, two of the founders of the Association, in a speech delivered in impeccable French. Not only did he advance the cause of people with disabilities in a public forum whilst in his capacity as President of IADH but with his quiet diplomacy acted also at times as peace-maker and conciliator behind the international scenes. We will miss him for this and so much more. To his family we extend our deepest sympathy. JN
