The oral health experiences of children with learning disabilities in special schools in Sheffield

Doi: 10.4483/JDOH_005Yesudian06

Abstract Aim and Objectives: There is a paucity of research conducted on the oral health of children with learning disabilities. Most studies have focussed on clinical status and have neglected the thoughts and perspectives of children themselves. The aim of the study was to explore the oral health experiences of children with learning disabilities attending special schools in Sheffield. A child-centred qualitative approach was used to capture a wide range of information from children about their oral health and experiences of dental health services, to identify areas for improvements in oral health services and oral health promotion initiatives for children with learning disabilities. Method: Eighteen children with learning disabilities who attended special schools were selected purposively to participate in the study. Focus groups and participatory activities were utilised including photographs and pictures to facilitate discussion with and between children. The data were analysed using a framework approach. Results: Children with learning disabilities generally had positive experiences of their oral health. The main themes that emerged were the children’s own experiences of dental treatment and their oral health practices. Participants understood the role of the dentist, the importance of attending, technical aspects (including restorations, radiographs and general anaesthesia) and displayed consumerist knowledge of differing brands of oral hygiene products. Conclusions: By using a qualitative approach, children with learning disabilities were enabled to describe in detail their experiences of oral health and services. Such insights are important in helping to develop and evaluate future dental services and oral health promotion initiatives for this group of children.
