Oral health status and treatment needs of residents at the Jerash Centre for Welfare and Rehabilitation

Abstract
Aim: The purpose of this study was to assess oral health status and dental treatment needs in a group of intellectually disabled Jordanian subjects. Methods: Seventy intellectually disabled residents of Jerash Centre for Welfare and Rehabilitation in Jordan were examined and their oral health status and dental treatment needs were assessed as part of oral health screening. Data and other information were gathered using a questionnaire. Subjects were randomly selected and examined over a period of four weeks. Data were statistically analysed using chi square test to determine statistically significant differences across oral health status; and the dental services employed. Results: The majority of subjects (98.6%) had natural teeth; all of whom showed oral problems. Of those on medication, 45.7% presented signs of negative effects on their oral health. Urgent dental treatment was deemed necessary in 47% of the residents. The majority of subjects (65.7%) had not seen a dentist within the last year. Statistically significant associations were found between increasing urgent dental treatment needs and age, and gingival problems and lack of dental care, P=0.016 and P=0.037 respectively. Conclusion: Intellectually disabled residents showed poor oral hygiene levels. Greater need for urgent dental treatment was significantly associated with age P=0.016; and gingival problems were significantly associated with lack of dental care, P=0.037. Teaching and motivating parents and caregivers at the centre can achieve oral hygiene improvement.
