British Society for Disability and Oral Health European Year of Disability Special Award – Primary Care Setting

This special award was created to celebrate the European Year of Disabled People and the year of Special Care Dentistry. The award will be made for: “ An innovative project that significantly improves the delivery of oral health care to individuals with a disability in a Primary Care Setting” This will be interpreted as either improvements to services or standards of oral health care, taking into account the scientific method and outcomes. There will be two prizes each of £1000. The award is open to all BSDH members with at least one year’s current membership. Submissions may be made by individuals or teams, who have worked on a project together. The successful entries shall form the basis of an oral presentation at the BSDH Winter meeting in December 2004. Submissions should consist of six copies of a project report of up to 3,000 words, to include a 300 word abstract. Winning abstracts will be published in the Journal of Disability and Oral Health and subsequent paper(s) will be considered for publication in the Journal. The report should include: • The project rationale, its background and significance • A critical review of the most significant literature • The aim(s) and objectives • A protocol to include how, when and where the work was carried out, in particular, detailing the involvement of other agencies • What were the outcomes and how were these assessed • What conclusions were reached and recommendations for the future The submission must include details of costs and sources of funding together with ethical approval, where required. Suitable projects might include: • Development of specific services • Focus group work involving patients and other agencies • Oral health promotion • Examples of good practice in inter-professional working The closing date for submissions is 30 June 2004. The Executive Committee will appoint a panel of judges and their decision will be final. Members of the BSDH Executive Committee and Editorial Board of JDOH are not eligible to apply for this award.
