Whats New? Margaret Melville – in memory
Margaret died peacefully on Sunday 6 July 2003. She had fought cancer for the last 14 years. Having believed she had won, she had a relapse late last year. She wrote to a number of people just after the spring meeting of BSDH in Edinburgh, her beloved city, apologising for having missed the meeting but saying that she was improving and she thought she was winning. As ever Margaret was positive, enthusiastic and planning for the future. For those who worked with Scotland to sort out her elderly aunts! – A very selfless individual. Margaret worked on the community mobile dental unit that provided a service for children with disabilities at “special” schools throughout Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham from 1976. She combined this with working in the Children’s Department at Guy’s Hospital, where she remained until her retirement. Margaret believed fervently in Special Care Dentistry and provision of dental care for those with disabilities. She was President of BSDH in 1985 and steered the way in which this interest group developed during its second decade. Margaret realised the need for a means of communication with the BSDH membership. Therefore, together with Deirdre Pool, she conceived the idea of the ‘Proceedings’. The first edition appeared in 1984. Together with members of her family and her husband’s secretary she gathered material, designed the format, typed the script, photocopied the pages and bound them together for the next four years. It laid the foundations for the Journal, a lasting memorial to her devotion Her influence on the developing speciality is enormous and she was, as International Representative, a great ambassador for the UK. Margaret served as International representative from 1986 - 1988, attending the conferences in Bergen in1986, and Philadelphia in 1988. She helped in raising the profile of the IADH Congress in Edinburgh in 1996, when her personal invitation to support the Congress was accepted by the Moderator of the Church of Scotland. All, with great affection, will remember Margaret. She will be missed, especially since she was rarely away from the December BSDH meeting, even in retirement. Her abounding enthusiasm was a real inspiration to so many people. We extend our sympathies to her husband Ian and her family at this very sad time. BSDH Members
