The Long and Winding Road A New Editor’s Perspective
Dr William M Palin

I am thrilled to be the new Editor of the European Journal of Prosthodontics and Restorative Dentistry. Although materials science is my main expertise, a primary reason for taking on this challenge is because I feel there is a great need in the dental field for an applied and translational journal that helps to connect the importance of robust materials science to the enquiring dentist. The technology that exists within the materials and prosthodontics area of dentistry are vast and advancing at a substantial rate and I hope that quality researchers in the field will soon see this Journal as one of their first choices for submission. Of course, the road is long. The first immediate aim will be to apply to Thomson-Reuters for assessment to acquire an Impact Factor (IF) and the process has already been initiated. Whilst the complexities and meaningfulness of IF are continually debated, it is important to establish a comparison with other related publications and to increase the Journal’s appeal for submission. I am very fortunate to work amongst an established academic and publishing team and I would like to thank them for helping me with the early stages and reorganisation over the past few months. Currently, the Editorial Board is small but effective and with the increasing number of submissions we will look to increase numbers internationally and to work more closely with the British Society of Prosthodontics (BSSPD) and the European Prosthodontic Association (EPA). The publisher, Dennis Barber Ltd., have also seen the transition to a new Editor as an opportunity to freshen the style of the Journal with a new cover and format. We are also pleased to announce our affiliation with the European Dental Materials Conference (Nuremberg, Germany; August 27/28th), which will provide a Special Issue of EJPRD with speakers’ papers and poster abstracts. Since beginning this role I have quickly learnt the many advantages of working with a relatively small publisher. There have already been many discussions on ideas to take the Journal forward, and the unique, innovative opportunities, not necessarily possible with the inflexibility of larger, mainstream publishers, are very exciting.
