Special Care Dentistry training- from an academic perspective

Introduction
Embarking on an academic career within healthcare is an occupation that can present many rewards and challenges.
Studies within the Journal of Dental Research on academic job satisfaction within dentistry have revealed consistent positive themes of feedback expressed by staff members such as the varied research opportunities, job diversity, intellectual challenge and the ability of lifelong learning (Haden, 2008; Roger, 2008). These are certainly incentives that can encourage dentists towards an academic role within dentistry.
