History of the British Society for Disability and Oral Health and British Society of Dentistry for the Handicapped

Foreword

In 2001, the British Society of Disability and Oral Health (BSDH) celebrated its 25th anniversary. Since the inaugural meeting of the Society in 1976, membership has now exceeded 700. Professor Raman Bedi, in his Presidential year, had the foresight to commission a piece of work that would detail the development of Special Care Dentistry and the establishment and growth of BSDH. Professor Stanley Gelbier, Honorary Senior Research Fellow for the Wellcome Trust Centre for the History of Medicine at University College London, was asked to undertake this task.
In preparing this document Professor Gelbier has meticulously researched the literature providing a fascinating insight into the early provision of care to patients with learning disabilities. Through a series of interviews with members of the Society, reviewing letters, documents and minutes of meetings, Professor Gelbier has not only gathered the facts but has also managed to capture the enthusiasm, commitment and dedication of those providing care to patients with special needs and those keen to see the development of a Society which will ultimately improve the oral care provided to the most vulnerable.
Professor Gelbier has described and illustrated with great sensitivity some of the special moments of the Society. This document is a treasure of information and memories. We are indebted to Professor Gelbier for his expertise, hard work and determination in compiling this document. As a Society we are fortunate to now have an accurate and detailed record of our history.
