The influence of a postgraduate qualification (Diploma/Master) in Sedation or Special Care Dentistry on work practices and career progression

Abstract
Introduction: The aim of this survey was to identify why people undertake postgraduate training and qualifications
in sedation and special care dentistry, their experience of taking courses and the impact of that training on their work practices and career progression. Method: A questionnaire survey was mailed to all candidates who had completed a Diploma in Conscious Sedation (DCS) or Master of Science degree (MSc) in Sedation and Special Care Dentistry (SSCD) at King’s College London Dental Institute (KCL DI) between 1997 and 2011. Results: There were 89 postgraduate students on the SSCD department’s alumni list, however, addresses for four people were not found. The response rate was 79% (67 respondents). The majority of the participants were male 78% (52), between the ages of 30 to 39 and had enrolled in the Diploma in Conscious Sedation course. Fourteen (21%) had enrolled in the MSc programme. Many of the people (9/20, 45%) who worked in multiple settings were general dental practitioners (GDPs) and 15 graduates (44%) were at the time of the study on the SCD specialist list. Conclusion: Postgraduate students were generally happy to undertake courses in sedation and special care and this often led to a career progression. They reported that attending lectures and participating in seminars were the most favourable learning modalities. The respondents identified that the clinical part of the course was most enjoyable experience from their courses.
