Obsessive Compulsive Disorder impeding access to dental services: a case report

A general medical practitioner referral to the Department of Special Care Dentistry requested assistance for a
patient who was unable to use dental services. This patient’s primary diagnosis of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
manifested as fear and anxiety of contracting disease in communal settings: particularly health care surroundings.
This case report describes the use of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Exposure Response Prevention.
It discusses the challenges faced in the provision of care for patients with mental illness.
