Reviews and commentary Dissociation in the dental surgery: recognition and management.

Abstract
General dental practitioners and specialist staff working in Special Care Dentistry especially, will from time to time
encounter patients who become unresponsive or exhibit seizure like behaviour in the surgery. Dissociation as one
possible cause is becoming better recognised across the disciplines of neurology, psychiatry and psychology. As a
sequel to a previous publication on refractory epilepsy (Ransford et al., 2014), this paper reviews the literature and
provides practical information to enable clinicians to recognise and manage dissociative seizures and similar
episodes. A case study is presented to illustrate some of the typical clinical challenges involved.
