Dementia-Friendly Dentistry: Good Practice Guidelines Faculty of General Dental Practice (UK)

Understanding the reality of the condition and the complex ways dementia affects each individual is a key element to improving standards of care for people living with dementia. As a profession that advises regular attendance for care, dental professionals are well-placed to play a major role in monitoring and helping ensure that high standards of care management exist. One in three people over 65 will die with dementia, but despite its prevalence, the condition remains underdiagnosed; fewer than half of people with dementia in
England receive a formal diagnosis.1 Improvements in rates of diagnosis have been observed, although considerable variation exists across the UK.2 Such disparities mean that many people are unaware of steps they can take to manage their condition, including planning for the future and how to access support and care.
