The dental needs of complex care (COMPASS) children at Evelina London Children’s Hospital

Abstract
Children with complex medical needs experience poor access to dental care, which can be detrimental to their oral health and overall wellbeing. Gastrostomy fed children experience low caries activity and high levels of plaque and calculus. Weekly dental ward rounds were initiated for complex care (COMPASS) children at Evelina London Children’s Hospital. This report highlights that although the medical needs of these children are complex, their dental needs are often simple. Provision of dental care during ward admissions is beneficial for the overall care of patients, whilst regular review and prevention should be provided in general and community dental services.
