Congenital trismus: an overview

Abstract
Trismus refers to limited mouth opening derived from the Greek word ‘trismos’ meaning squeaking, whistling, whizzing. It has several potential causes varying from simple and non-progressive to those that are potentially threatening. It is quite rare in neonates and can be part of developmental defects. Trismus in children can be either acquired due to infection, trauma, and dental treatment or of congenital onset in which there is a restricted mouth opening present at birth. This paper presents the various aetiologies and differential diagnoses of congenital trismus, classified into syndromic and non-syndromic.
