Hard to swallow: dysphagia, pooling saliva and hypocalcaemia

Abstract
Educational case report of a ten-year-old male of Asian origin referred to the Paediatric Dental Department by his paediatrician to eliminate an oral cause for a relatively new history of pooling of intraoral secretions. His medical history comprised of non-verbal autism, learning disabilities and a history of chronic constipation. The child’s father reported a ten-day history of the child holding his medications, food and drink in his mouth but not swallowing as well as increased pooling saliva in his mouth and drooling. The child later developed abdominal tenderness and suspected headaches. Blood tests revealed significant hypocalcaemia secondary to vitamin D deficiency.
