Dental health research (1997-2007) concerning people with learning disabilities: a systematic review addressing the extent to which they are involved in research

Abstract With society’s emphasis on the rights of the disadvantaged, the attitude of those who provide their healthcare has, correctly, come under scrutiny. This review aims to describe the extent to which contemporary dental research has been conducted with or on adults with learning difficulties. Using Medline, we applied search terms to find dental research, from 1997 to 2007, involving adults with learning disabilities. After appropriate exclusion criteria, articles were assigned to one of four categories developed by Marshman et al. (2007). These comprised three category levels of research with and one of research on. The process revealed 173 articles. Of these, 20 (11.5%) had conducted research with people with learning disabilities, only 2% involved these people actively in research, 82% fell into the research on category. Future research should strive to involve people with learning disabilities as fully as possible in the research process.
