‘ What’s New’ Professor G B Winter 1928–2002
It is with great sadness that I pass on the news that Professor Gerry Winter, a founder of BSDH died in London on Sunday 22 December 2002. He was buried on Christmas Eve. Whilst always espousing the cause of disadvantaged children everywhere, Gerry supported BSDH throughout its first 25 years and became an honorary life member, along with a co-founder, Arnold Franks in December 1996 at the Annual General Meeting of BSDH at the Royal College of Physicians in London. Gerry Winter made major contributions to the development of care for disabled children; as well as being medically and dentally qualified, he also Gerry also believed in enabling others from overseas to take advantage of education opportunities in the UK and as well as the very successful courses run at the Eastman, he took part in the organisation of advanced courses in Paediatric Dentistry with the British Council, bringing postgraduates from overseas to Centres of Excellence in the UK. As a reviewer for this Journal he could be relied upon to turn a manuscript around rapidly, producing a perceptive and helpful review, conscious always of maintaining scientific rigour whilst encouraging the fledgling author. Despite the bluff exterior, Gerry was generous of his time and encyclopaedic knowledge. Disabled young people everywhere have lost a champion of their cause.
